"On behalf of AARP's 40 million members, I want to commend the millions
of veterans across the globe that have bravely served and sacrificed for
our country by putting their lives on the line. From the birth of this
nation, generations of men and women have selflessly stepped up to defend
our freedom. For this, we not only owe them our respect and gratitude for
their actions in the line of duty, but also for the contributions they have
made to keep our nation strong.
"On this Veterans Day, I also want to recognize the unsung heroes of
this war who are often overlooked: the parents and caregivers of our
veterans, many of whom have made countless sacrifices to care for their
loved ones as they return from war. AARP thanks our veterans and their
families for their courage and extends its support in helping to educate
all about the triumphs and hardships many face upon their return."
Earlier this year, AARP staff met with wounded soldiers and their
families from across the country to talk about the impact, both financially
and emotionally, that their journeys have had on their lives. These stories
are chronicled in a one-hour documentary titled "Picking Up the Pieces"
available online at
